The Internet has transformed the way in which 'news' is published, distributed and consumed. It has also had a dramatic, and negative, impact on the traditional media at a national, regional and local level.
In the past, many local and regional newspapers would have whole sections of the publication dedicated to business news. These days, they are far less common and stories about office, industrial and retail transactions, new businesses opening or expanding are fewer and have to compete even harder for coverage.
According to Ofcom’s 2019 report 'News Consumption in the UK', between 2010 and 2018, national newspaper circulation fell in the UK 52.5%. The fall in local and regional titles has been just as dramatic. At the same time, the Ofcom report revealed a rise in the use of social media as a source of news, with 49% of respondents reporting that they used social media to access news. An increase of 5% in just twelve months.
